CAERNARFON 32 – NANT CONWY 32

Ar y diwedd, clywyd rhywun yn dweud “Ni allech chi fod wedi ysgrifennu’r sgript”. Prin ychydig funudau i fynd, aeth Caernarfon, eisoes 2 bwynt ar y blaen, drosodd yn y gornel. Roedd angen y trosiad i roi mantais ddiguro iddynt. Collwyd y cyfle. Roedd digon o amser i ailgychwyn. Llwyddodd Nant i ennill y bêl ac ar ôl pwysau di-baid, sawl cosb a phechod bin i gapten Caernarfon, aeth Nant drosodd rhwng y pyst. Fe wnaeth Caron Davies drosi a rhwystro Caernarfon am yr eildro y tymor hwn pan oeddent yn ceisio dod â record gynghrair dwy flynedd, di-guro Nant i ben.

Roedd yn gêm a welodd y fantais yn newid drwy’r amser. Agorodd Caernarfon y sgôr gyda chais heb ei drosi, ar ôl i’r Nant roi eu hunain dan bwysau gan gic a darwyd ymlaen. Dilynodd cais i ddod yn gyfartal cyfartal gan Ifan Williams o fewn deg munud. Roedd hyn ynghyd â’r trosiad a chic gosb gan Davies yn rhoi Nant 10 – 5 ar y blaen.

Yna, aeth Carwyn Ellis drosodd ar y dde i gynyddu’r fantais i 15 – 5.

Roedd Nant yn ymwybodol y byddai angen iddyn nhw adeiladu mantais dda gan y byddent yn chwarae i fyny’r llethr yn yr ail hanner. Felly, roedd yn rhwystredig pan wnaethon nhw ildio ar strôc hanner amser ar ôl gyrru ymlaen fel pac. Gwnaeth y trosiad y sgôr hanner amser 15 – 12 o blaid Nant.

Yn yr ail hanner, gwelwyd Caernarfon yn mynd ar y blaen yn fuan gyda chais heb ei drosi, cyn i Deian Roberts igam o gamu ei ffordd drosodd. Nant yn ôl ar y blaen!

Cais arall, gyda hwn wedi’i drosi, yn gweld Caernarfon ar y blaen eto o 24 – 22, cyn i gic gosb gan Davies weld y fantais yn newid dwylo o blaid Nant. Doedd hyn ddim i bara’n hir wrth i gic gosb roi Caernarfon dau bwynt i fyny, 27 – 25.

Yna cawsom gyffro y munudau olaf.

Mae Nant yn parhau i fod ar frig y tabl ond mae ganddynt gemau anodd i orffen eu tymor: dwy’n erbyn Pwllheli, gyfda Llandudno a’r Bala, unwaith eto, gartref.

At the end somebody was heard to say “You couldn’t have written the script”. With barely a couple of minutes to go, Caernarfon, already 2 points ahead, went over in the corner. It needed the conversion to give them an unassailable lead. It was missed. There was enough time for a restart. Nant were able to win the ball and after incessant pressure, multiple penalties and a sin binning for the Caernarfon captain, Nant went over between the posts. Caron Davies converted and frustrated Caernarfon for the second time this season when they looked to end Nant’s two year plus unbeaten league record.

It was a game that saw the lead change hands throughout. Caernarfon opened the scoring with an unconverted try, after Nant put themselves under pressure from an unforced knock-on. An equalising try by Ifan Williams followed within ten minutes. This plus the conversion and a penalty by Davies put Nant 10 – 5 ahead.

Carwyn Ellis then went over on the right to increase the lead to 15 – 5.

Nant were aware that they would need to build a good lead as they would be playing up the slope in the second half. So it was frustrating when they conceded on the stroke of half time  following a driving maul. The conversion made the halftime score 15 – 12 in Nant’s favour.

The second half soon saw Caernarfon take the lead with an unconverted try, before Deian Roberts jinked his way over. Nant back in front.

Another try, this one converted, saw Caernarfon ahead again by 24 – 22, before a penalty by Davies saw the lead change hands in Nant’s favour. This was not to last long as a penalty put Caernarfon two point up, 27 – 25.

We then had the excitement of the last few minutes.

Nant remain top of the table but have tough games to finish their season against Pwllheli, Llandudno and Bala, yet again.
